THE PUBLICATION
Painting opens

Story changes the view.
Illumination Media brings original paintings and thoughtful essays together to look again at women whose lives have been flattened by fame, history, or the roles assigned to them.
The publication began with artist David Langston’s paintings of Anna Pavlova and Martha Graham. As the stories behind the images expanded, the project became a broader editorial inquiry into vision, innovation, creative determination, and the distance between a public narrative and a full human life.
Because remarkable women deserve to be remembered for more than the roles history assigned them.

Writing & Editing
Developed publication copy, profiles, launch language, and editorial framing while helping refine long-form stories for clarity, structure, and voice.
Launch & Platform
Helped build the Substack architecture, navigation, About language, launch sequence, and the presentation of the publication as a cohesive editorial world.

THE EDITORIAL SYSTEM
One image begins a much larger conversation.
The visual language moves between David’s paintings, historical photographs, archival material, and clean editorial typography. The artwork earns the first look. The writing then expands what the image asks us to reconsider.

David Langston fuses painting and journalism to illuminate the vision, innovation, and brave determination of women. Across a 45-year career in creative direction, design, and brand strategy, he has developed a practice grounded in close observation and the belief that an image can hold both a public history and a more intimate truth.
His paintings for Illumination Media draw on impressionism and Orphist abstraction, using color, gesture, and interpretation to begin stories that move beyond the roles history assigned their subjects.

Each painting is both an artwork and an editorial starting point. The publication follows what the image opens: a physical challenge, a cultural misconception, a creative breakthrough, or a part of the subject’s life that deserves another look.
